Volunteer Opportunities at Little Silver EMS
Little Silver EMS is one of the only 100% volunteer-run EMS squads in the area. When someone calls for help, it’s their neighbors who respond.
We’re looking for community members to step forward. Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, remote worker, student, or working professional, flexible scheduling and full support from our squad make it possible to serve in a way that fits your life.
Volunteer Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs) support EMTs during emergency calls, helping provide immediate basic life-saving care to patients in need. EMRs assist with patient assessment, stabilization, and other critical support until more advanced care is provided.
EMR training is provided internally by Little Silver EMS instructors, making it a great entry point for volunteers interested in emergency medical service. Many members start as EMRs while exploring further training in emergency response.
Volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are the heart of our response team. As a volunteer EMT with Little Silver EMS, you’ll provide lifesaving care to neighbors during medical emergencies, accidents, and community events.
New Jersey EMT certification includes ~200 hours of classroom, hands-on, and clinical training, preparing you to assess patients, deliver Basic Life Support, and use specialized emergency medical equipment.
No previous medical experience is required, just a commitment to learning and serving your community. Once certified, you’ll respond as part of a trained crew, providing compassionate care when it matters most.
Becoming an EMT is a chance to gain valuable skills, build strong friendships, and make a real difference in Little Silver.
Already in healthcare? Licensed professionals such as RNs, PAs, NPs, and physicians may be eligible to complete an accelerated pathway to become a certified EMT in New Jersey.
Administrative Member
Not every role on our team happens in the ambulance. Administrative members help keep Little Silver EMS running behind the scenes by supporting fundraising efforts, community events, bookkeeping, and day-to-day operations.
This role is perfect for volunteers who want to support emergency services and give back to the community, even if they’re not interested in medical training.
Cadet Program
The Little Silver EMS Cadet Program consists of teenagers aged 15-17 residing in the borough of Little Silver or a surrounding town. Cadets learn about the exciting field of Emergency Medical Services in a safe and structured environment. All cadets are trained as First Responders and are certified to render vital basic life support skills such as CPR, hemorrhage control, splinting/ bandaging, and treatment of other medical emergencies. With this knowledge and training, cadets assist the EMTs and First Responders of Little Silver EMS on medical calls throughout the borough of Little Silver and surrounding towns. What You’ll Need to Join Little Silver EMS
Our squad welcomes volunteers from many backgrounds, however you must meet the following requirements to serve with Little Silver EMS:
Reside in Little Silver, Fair Haven, Rumson, Shrewsbury, Oceanport, or Red Bank
Members are encouraged to participate in one scheduled night shift per week
Pass required background checks and fingerprinting
Cadets may join Little Silver EMS starting at age 15
Members may pursue EMR training at 15 and EMT certification starting at 16
Volunteers become full squad members at age 18

No prior medical experience is required. We provide all training, certifications, and support for free.
We work with every volunteer to create a schedule that fits their life. Some members choose to be available one night a week, while others participate more frequently, it all depends on your availability. As an all-volunteer squad, we value members who stay active throughout the month and contribute when they are able.
One of the benefits of a volunteer squad is that the more trained members we have, the more the responsibility can be shared across the team.
Training time requirements vary depending on the role. The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course is approximately 60 hours of training, typically completed over about 8–12 weeks, and includes American Heart Association BLS certification. The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course includes approximately 200 hours of training, typically completed over 4–6 months through a schedule designed for people with jobs, families, and other commitments.
After submitting your application, a squad officer will contact you to walk you through the next steps, including a background check and an informal interview with our team.
To join the squad, you must live in Little Silver, Fair Haven, Rumson, Shrewsbury, Oceanport, or Red Bank. When an emergency call comes in, we need you close enough to respond!
The EMS Application Process
Complete the Interest Form Below: Complete the interest form listed on the Little Silver EMS website. Once completed, a line officer will contact you to advance the application process.
Background Check: Once your application is reviewed and approved, we will send you to LSPD for fingerprinting and a background check.
Meeting With Team: After your background check clears, we’ll invite you to visit Little Silver EMS for an informal, get-to-know-you interview.
Swearing In: Once your membership is accepted, you will attend a squad monthly meeting to be sworn in as a Little Silver EMS volunteer.
