You Can Be a Great EMT or EMR. Five Types of People Who Thrive at Little Silver EMS

When people picture an EMT or EMR, they often imagine someone with years of medical experience,  a paid professional or a volunteer with unlimited time.

But at Little Silver Volunteer EMS, we are not paid and many volunteers started out thinking they weren’t qualified at all.

Some are parents balancing school pickup and family schedules, or remote workers wanting a stronger connection to the community around them. Others are retirees looking for a meaningful way to give back to the community they love,or students exploring healthcare for the first time.

In towns like Little Silver, Fair Haven, Rumson, and Shrewsbury, volunteer EMS is powered by neighbors helping neighbors — and many of the people who thrive here are everyday residents who simply made the decision to step forward and learn.

At Little Silver EMS, what matters most is that you care about your community. Some volunteers come in with medical experience, but many don’t. Curiosity, a willingness to learn, staying calm under pressure, ability to work as part of a team, and care about helping people in your community are the attributes that make a great squad member.

Our team provides training, mentorship, and support for new volunteers at every experience level. Whether someone is exploring emergency healthcare for the first time or simply looking for a meaningful way to give back locally, volunteers are never expected to figure things out alone.

Many of the strongest EMTs and EMRs started out unsure if they could do it at all.

The truth is, great EMTs and EMRs often come from everyday walks of life. Here are five types of people who commonly thrive in volunteer EMS and why their skills and experiences matter. One of them might sound a lot like you.

A lot of volunteers join EMS because they were looking for something more than the usual day-to-day routine. Maybe work started feeling repetitive, or they wanted to become more active in their community.

Volunteering as an EMT or EMR gives you the opportunity to directly help neighbors during emergencies while becoming part of a dedicated team. You’ll gain life-saving skills, friends, and an appreciation for giving back.

And, despite what many people assume, you don’t need any prior medical experience to get started. Little Silver EMS provides training, mentorship, and support for volunteers just beginning their journey.

Remote and hybrid workers often make great EMS volunteers, especially during daytime hours when schedules are flexible.

Many volunteers who work from home say EMS gives them something they were missing: a reason to step away from the computer, connect with people face-to-face, and become more involved in the community around them.

One of the biggest misconceptions about EMS volunteering is that it requires putting your entire life on hold. At Little Silver EMS, flexibility is part of the culture. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in ways that realistically fit around work, family, and other commitments. Most calls take about an hour, so you can respond to a call for help, and then go back to your workday.

Parents often bring some of the most valuable qualities to EMS: patience, communication skills, compassion, and a strong connection to the community around them.

Some volunteers respond to calls while their children are in school during the day. Others join once their kids are older and they finally have time to focus on themselves and their hobbies again. Our volunteers often find that volunteering becomes more than just responding to calls. It’s a way to reconnect with neighbors, meet new people, and feel part of something meaningful close to home.

Little Silver EMS is built around the idea of neighbors serving neighbors, and that community-first mindset is what keeps volunteer emergency care local.

For students and young professionals interested in healthcare, nursing, medicine, or public safety, volunteering offers a chance to experience emergency medicine in a real-world setting.

Volunteers build hands-on skills, work alongside experienced responders, and gain confidence communicating with patients and teammates during unpredictable situations. Whether someone is exploring a long-term healthcare career or simply looking for community service outside of the classroom, volunteering provides opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.

For people worried they are “starting from zero,” Little Silver EMS helps guide volunteers through the training process from start to finish. EMR training offers an accessible introduction to emergency response skills, while EMT certification provides more advanced classroom, hands-on, and clinical training for volunteers looking to take on a larger role.

New volunteers receive mentorship and support from experienced members of the squad, so you’re never expected to figure it out alone.

Many Little Silver EMS volunteers joined for one simple reason: they care deeply about this community and wanted to find a meaningful way to help.

Little Silver Emergency Medical Services is one of the only 100% volunteer-run EMS squads in the area, responding to emergency calls with trained local residents who step forward to help when their neighbors need them most.

And not every volunteer role involves riding in the ambulance. Little Silver EMS also relies on administrative volunteers who support fundraising, community outreach, administrative projects, and behind-the-scenes operations that help keep the organization running.

At Little Silver EMS, there is no single “type” of volunteer. Our members come from different careers, backgrounds, and stages of life, but they all share a willingness to learn, support their neighbors, and be part of something bigger than themselves.

Many volunteers originally joined thinking they were too busy, too inexperienced, or not qualified enough to help. With training, mentorship, and support from the squad, they discovered volunteering was more realistic — and more rewarding — than they expected. If you’ve ever wondered whether volunteering could fit into your life, now may be the perfect time to explore it.

Little Silver EMS welcomes volunteers from Little Silver, Fair Haven, Rumson, Shrewsbury, and Oceanport, with opportunities available for adults and cadets starting at age 15.
