Thomas joined Little Silver EMS at just 14 years old, drawn by the opportunity to help others and be part of something bigger than himself.
Since then, he has progressed from cadet to EMT to EMS Chief—and Little Silver EMS remains an important part of his life.
From growing up in the squad to helping lead it, Thomas shares what has kept him involved, what he’s learned along the way, and why he encourages others to consider volunteering, too.
From Cadet to Little Silver EMS Chief

“Though I joined the department at a young age, I knew I wanted to contribute to something greater than myself,” Thomas shared. “EMS provided the chance to serve the community, gain guidance from experienced volunteers, and collaborate with a team dedicated to being there for others in critical moments.”
Since joining, Thomas has grown from cadet to EMR, EMT, and eventually EMS Chief. Each role brought new responsibilities and lessons. “Leading as EMS Chief taught me about accountability, leadership, and the essential need to support our responders,” Thomas shared.
His service has extended beyond EMS, too. In 2018, Thomas co-founded the Ridge Run for Suicide Prevention. As Thomas shared, “service extends beyond emergency response to include raising awareness, assisting families, and uniting the community around key causes.”
Today, as Assistant to the Town Administrator/Clerk, Thomas sees firsthand the connection between municipal government, volunteers, and local organizations. “It underscores how thriving communities depend on individuals who step up, stay involved, and lift up those around them.”
Why Thomas Continues to Volunteer
“My primary motivation has always been the core mission and the volunteers who support that mission,” Thomas said. “LS EMS provides crucial assistance when needed, which is deeply meaningful.”
Just as important are the relationships he has built with fellow volunteers. Thomas describes Little Silver EMS as a team where members from different backgrounds lend their experience to support one another. It is a team where every contribution matters.
“There is a strong spirit of teamwork where every contribution is valued, regardless of whether a member is new or long-serving.”
What it Means to Serve
For Thomas, the most fulfilling part of volunteering comes down to being there for someone when they need help.
“Working in emergency medical services means frequently meeting people at their lowest points,” he shared. “Whether providing medical treatment, offering a reassuring voice, or simply remaining a steady presence, being there for patients in those critical moments is immensely meaningful.”
Since Thomas first joined as a cadet, he has watched emergency services—and volunteering—evolve. Training standards, professionalism, and expectations have increased, while busy personal schedules have made recruiting and retaining volunteers more challenging. For Little Silver EMS, continuing to bring new volunteers into the squad is more important than ever.
Supporting The Next Generation of EMS Volunteers
For someone who may be hesitant about volunteering, his advice is:
“Take the first step. You aren’t expected to be an expert on day one; LS EMS is an environment designed for learning and personal advancement.”
While volunteering requires commitment, Thomas says what you gain in return can be invaluable. “You gain a second family, develop essential life skills, and have a tangible, positive impact on the lives of those around you.”
