Busting Myths About Becoming a Little Silver EMS Volunteer

Why have you not considered volunteering with Little Silver EMS? Is it because you thought:

“I don’t have medical experience.”
“I don’t have enough time.”
“I’m not qualified.”

We hear this all the time. And many of our volunteers once discounted their fit due to the same thoughts. Is this what’s keeping you from learning more?

If you’ve been curious about volunteering but aren’t sure where to start, let’s clear up a few of the biggest misconceptions.

Myth #1: “You need a medical background to become an EMT.”

Reality: You don’t.

One of the biggest misconceptions about volunteering is that you need prior medical experience. Little Silver EMS welcomes members from all kinds of backgrounds and provides the education and training needed to become an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

EMR training is provided in-house by Little Silver EMS instructors, making it a great starting point for anyone new to emergency medicine. Those interested in becoming an EMT complete approximately 200 hours of classroom and clinical training through a schedule designed to fit your life.

Many of our current volunteers started with zero medical experience, but knew they wanted to learn something new while also serving their neighbors.

Myth #2: “Volunteering takes over your entire schedule.”

Reality: It does not, and we understand that life comes first.

Our volunteers have careers, attend school, raise families, and enjoy retirement. Volunteering is something they fit into their lives, not the other way around.

Whether you’re a remote worker with flexibility during the day, a parent with time while the kids are in school, or someone looking to give back after retirement, there are different ways to contribute without putting your life on hold.

Members are encouraged to participate in one scheduled night shift each week, but the squad works with volunteers to build a schedule that fits their availability. Whether you can serve one evening a week or have additional flexibility throughout the month, the goal is to make volunteering realistic alongside work, school, and family life.

Myth #3: “You’ll be left on your own during emergencies.”

Reality: You are always part of a team. Nobody is expected to figure things out alone.

From your first day, you’ll train alongside experienced volunteers who help build your confidence on calls. Through hands-on training, regular drills, and continuing education, you’ll develop your skills with the support of a team that wants to see you succeed.

Every call is a team effort, and every volunteer continues learning throughout their time with the squad.

Myth #4: “I wouldn’t fit in.”

Reality: There’s no “typical” Little Silver EMS volunteer.

The squad includes parents, retirees, students, working professionals, and neighbors from many different backgrounds. Some are looking to learn new skills, others want an outlet from their 9-5 and an opportunity to become more involved with our community.

If you live in Little Silver, Fair Haven, Rumson, Shrewsbury, Oceanport, or Red Bank, you’re eligible to apply.

No matter your experience level, you’ll find a team that’s invested in helping you succeed. Everyone starts somewhere, and one of the biggest strengths of Little Silver EMS is the supportive culture built around mentorship, teamwork, and shared purpose.
